Nevada’s First State-Licensed Cannabis Consumption Lounge Opens in Las Vegas

In a historic development for Nevada’s cannabis industry, the state’s first regulated cannabis consumption lounge, Smoke and Mirrors, officially opened its doors on February 24, 2024. Located at 2875 S. Sammy Davis Jr. Drive in Las Vegas, this lounge marks a significant milestone in providing legal and safe spaces for cannabis consumption.

A New Era for Cannabis Consumption

The opening of Smoke and Mirrors addresses a longstanding challenge for both residents and tourists in Nevada. Since the legalization of recreational marijuana in 2016, consumers faced limited options for legal consumption, as public use and consumption in hotels remained prohibited. The introduction of licensed consumption lounges offers a solution by providing designated venues where adults aged 21 and over can legally consume cannabis products.

Legislative Background

The establishment of consumption lounges became possible following the passage of Assembly Bill 341 in 2021, which authorized the operation of alcohol-free cannabis consumption lounges in Nevada. This legislation allowed for both stand-alone lounges and those attached to existing dispensaries, aiming to enhance the state’s cannabis infrastructure and tourism appeal.

Smoke and Mirrors: A Pioneering Venue

Operated by Thrive Cannabis Marketplace, Smoke and Mirrors offers a curated selection of premium cannabis products, including flowers, concentrates, and edibles. The lounge provides a sophisticated and safe environment for patrons to enjoy cannabis, featuring modern amenities and adhering to strict regulatory standards to ensure responsible consumption.

At the grand opening, Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom, a longtime advocate for cannabis reform, made the inaugural purchase and lit a joint at 4:20 p.m., symbolizing the progressive shift in Nevada’s cannabis policies.

Future Prospects

The successful launch of Smoke and Mirrors sets a precedent for additional consumption lounges in Nevada. The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board has issued 19 conditional licenses for such establishments, indicating a broader acceptance and integration of cannabis consumption venues within the state’s social and economic framework.

As these lounges begin operations, they are expected to contribute significantly to the local economy, create employment opportunities, and offer safe, regulated environments for cannabis consumers. This development reflects Nevada’s commitment to evolving its cannabis industry responsibly and inclusively.
